I am Daði Jónsson; a filmmaker / Documentarist. Reykjavík is my city of choice where I live and work.
I was born in 1983 in Illinois, USA where I lived until I was 7 years old. I moved to Iceland when my father finished his studies. Since I was about 12 I have worked my share of shit jobs and, in most cases, learned what I don't want to do with life. Although, often hard and breathtakingly boring, all of these jobs were necessary in order for me to find my way to where I am now.
I started making films around 16 years old, bought my first DV camera one year later and have been at it ever since. I started off filming my friends skate- and snowboarding, surfing, longboarding, dirt biking... a whole heap of parties and anything else that came to my attention. A time came where not so much filming was happening, and my camera collected dust while I got lost in career searching. Studying to be an auto mechanic… then an auto body painter…then into sociology, before landing smoothly in graphic design where I learned the basics of creative work. What came next? Graduation, travels in Asia where I filmed a doc about a kayak trip my friends. More traveling, a film school, lived and worked in Copenhagen for 2 years, and finally moved to Århus where I am currently based, and loving it!
Over the last few years my attention has been on documentary work (film and photography) and will continue to be - as long as I have the balls!
I like challenging projects and frequently try to make them for myself. Some are still pending but where patience ends stubbornness begins, and I have plenty of both.
My father is a music teacher, my mother a hairdresser. Both have inspired me to find something I like doing, and learn how to do it better than anybody else… I believe that is what I am doing today.
